Convenient, reviewable videotapes, ready when you are. The READ MY LIPS! tapes provide speechreading practice in real-life situations. They make the speechreading student do what has to be done to become a speechreader.
An actor will make a presentation and pause for a moment while you decide what was said. After a short pause, the correct response appears at the bottom of the screen as a subtitle. If you have trouble with a particular presentation, rewind the tape and review it until you recognize those word(s), then move on. Practice for 15-20 minutes at a time, then take a break. Come back and review, then move on to more difficult material.
You will not be able to hear the actors say the words. We did that on purpose in order to make sure the brain is being forced to rely solely on visual cues. In real life your residual hearing will make it even easier to understand, but in order to learn to use your eyes we found that not using audible words helped the user to learn speechreading more effectively.
No shortcuts were taken making this series. There is a lot of material to practice, but that is what will make you a successful speechreader.
